Review: Todd Goldman has never been very successful at anything... until he sees an advertisement for subjects needed in a lucid dream experiment. Of course he leaped at the chance to get paid to sleep, and soon learned that he had an aptitude for lucid dreaming (learning to control your dreams so that you make the storyline). But as his lucid dreams get better and better, reality goes downhill as he loses his job, his girlfriend, his parents' respect, and now it seems he might even lose his life. He finds himself having strange out-of-body experiences that the researchers are quick to dismiss, and everything takes a turn for the darker when one researcher is willing to risk killing Todd in order to get the data he wants.

I was excited to read this book for two main reasons. The first is that I love psychological thrillers, and the second, bigger one is that I've long been fascinated by lucid dreams. You can control everything about them if you get good enough, and that means you can do anything, even flying, and it'll feel real. Some people just naturally have lucid dreams every so often, while others have to use (safe!) methods to try to induce them. For example, one method is to make your last waking thought "I am dreaming".

The lucid dream aspect of TODD THE DREAMER was excellent. Even though I already knew a lot about it, it was still intriguing to read about. You can tell that the author did her research, and the facts were blended well enough with the story so that it never felt dry. There were other topics that I found fascinating as well concerning dreams and the brain, but again, it was done well enough that anyone who would normally be bored by this most likely wouldn't.

This book was definitely dark and twisty, and in a good way! Although there were one or two plot twists I saw coming, the biggest one (the one at the end) took me by surprise. The entire plot was like one giant mind explosion, which was my favorite thing about it. The only thing I didn't like as much about this book was that I had a hard time relating to Todd, and that sort of detracted from the story. Otherwise, I enjoyed this, and fans of suspenseful, psychological thrillers definitely will as well! 3 out of 5 stars.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected the review I wrote.
