Love Triangles

Love triangles have become increasingly prevalent in YA fiction, particularly in the paranormal romance genre. And of course, as with any trend, there are fans and haters, and almost everyone seems to fall in one category or another. For me, I'm not sure I would use such black-and-white classification when it comes to my tastes for love triangles.

I will admit, though, that they can be seriously overdone. I feel like almost every paranormal romance I read has one, even when the book would be fine or better without it. It's true that love triangles had a conflict to romance and if well done, can be exciting to read about. The only problem, though, is that they're not always exactly well done.

It annoys me so much when a female protagonist bounces back and forth between two guys, being in love with whichever one she happens to be standing next to. I felt like this was the case in the Wings series, where Laurel kissed another guy and got mad at her boyfriend for being jealous. Um, okay.

What do you think? Do you like love triangles, do you hate them, or are you on the fence? Does anyone know any books with well-written triangles?

I like love triangles if it's done tastefully, and if it's like an integral part of the story. However, if it's just more of a prop than a real situation that a book can't do without, then no thanks.

I appreciate a good love triangle plot line every once in a while, but if it seems like the author just randomly added it in there 'just because,' it turns me off. It has to actually fit in the story and the development, and the story's purpose.

We're totally with you and Nina on this. We like love triangles where the boys genuinely represent two different options, two different worlds, two different parts of HERSELF that the heroine has to choose between.

Also, we would like to point out that in real life, love triangles probably suck b/c you have to hurt someone, and that's never any fun.

Oh! In terms of good love triangles, we think Twilight (yes, believe it or not), Hunger Games, and Forest of Hands and Teeth all do a pretty good job with them.

Hmmmm. It's funny, I hadn't encountered any love triangles worth caring about until The Hunger Games. And then, in my newbie YA mind (I read the first book before it was actually out, that's how old I am. was. whatever.), I was stunned. How is this going to work? How can she choose? I didn't know what it meant to be Team So-and-so. But I was Team Gale. I was sure that someone was going to end up dead. (Personally, I think that's the only way to rightly fix a love triangle, haha.) But yeah, I do like them. But then, I don't read much paranormal, and I know they like to hang out there. If I were inundated, perhaps I would think differently...

Ohhh love triangles. The drama. Honestly I don't really like them. Unless they actually feel natural (which is pretty much never) then they just feel like a gimmick from the author to get their readers more invested in their books. While I LOVE The Hunger Games I do think that the love triangle was dealt with rather poorly. There was so much build up to who she would choose and then it was just like "Oh well Gale's gone and he was too fiery anyway, so yay I'm with Peeta!" I mean it was wrapped up in less than one page. :P I think it would have been better if Gale had died but whatevs. Anyway I think they are a bit too prevalent. But romance in YA just seems to prevalent anyways.
