8 Facts of My Week (8)

1. I'm learning to use the SEM (scanning electron microscope) at school, and let me tell you, some of those images are absolutely gorgeous and fascinating and even a little bit scary. It's quite complicated to use, too!

2. The other day in lit class, when class started, only half of us were there. Our teacher waited a bit and finally, confused, started the class, still glancing periodically at the door to see if anyone magically arrived. When class ended, the other half filed in, looking around confusedly and saying, "Wait, does class start yet?"

3. Our school had an annoying pep rally yesterday. It basically consisted of watching as various sports teams were called up and then listening to their names. Every so often, some shirtless guys would come out and paint the letters of the name of our school mascot on their torsos and then run around shouting their letters so that we could learn how to spell. It was very instructional, I'm sure, although I wouldn't know seeing as I was reading during the whole thing.

4. After school, my bus is supposed to arrive before 4:10, which is when school officially ends. (I won't even get into how off-schedule it is in the morning, when it's supposed to come at 7:01.) I ended up having to wait in the rain for half an hour until it finally showed up. We have decided this was the Great Bus Mishap of 2011.

5. I have a limited number of texts, and an unlimited number of things I want to say. This can only end well.

6. I have been studying like crazy for the past while. There's this one program I want to get into, and the super-hard admission test is coming up in a couple weeks!

7. I am running out of things to say.

8. Uhh... I like ice cream.

8 Facts of My Week (7)

1. I was taking a math quiz yesterday, and it basically had one question: Graph this really scary-looking function. I took a deep breath and did my best, but kept getting the weirdest, squiggliest thing that definitely did not look right. My heart was pounding, and I kept envisioning the big fat 0 I was sure to get with this mess in front of me. At last I handed it in, hoping for the best. My teacher glanced down at my paper and said, "Oh, good, that graph is correct." Hooray squiggly graphs!

2. I swear, every time I take a shower the water's either icy cold or scorching hot. Why is there no perfect temperature in the middle? These are the great questions of life I find myself pondering.

3. Third trimester begins at school. I made a list of all the grades I need this trimester in order to have an A for the year. Some are pleasing (I only need an 85 in physics to maintain an A) while others are frightening (a 97 in lit?). It's pretty much impossible to get a 4.0 at the school I go to (I think I know of one person who did), but I still want to be pretty close.

4. In my nanotechnology class, we were looking at lotus leaves. Basically, if you look at them under an electron microscope, they have all these pointy little nanofibers. When a water droplet lands on them, it kind of balances on those points, so if you take  a beaker of water and a dropper and just drop the water beads (how many times have I said "drop" so far?), the water droplets (oh, there's another) BOUNCE. Like, legitimately bounce around on the leaf. HOW COOL IS THAT.

5. I'm very excited because on Monday, I start special sessions at school to learn how to use the electron microscope. I hope to get accepted to the school research program! Before I can use the microscope, I have to pass a safety quiz, so my teacher gave me some materials to look over. Did you know that you're not allowed to drink radioactive materials? Who knew!

6. Zhong zi is the best food in the world. Seriously. Randomly this past week I've been having such a craving for it. You take meat, sticky rice, and vegetables, and wrap it up in either lotus leaves or bamboo leaves, and then steam it. The result is so delicious.

7. In math, an exclamation mark means "factorial", and it means that if you have something like 5! (five factorial), it's equal to 5 times 4 times 3 times 2 times 1. On my quiz, my chemistry teacher put "100!", so I guess I got 100 times 99 times 98 times 97...

8. Someone mistook my locker for theirs, and put their combination lock on it. That was a pleasant day :P

8 Facts of My Week (6)

Just one this time, actually.

Dear Heart,

...I told you so.

From,
Brain

If you want to share your high school love stories (like especially the ones where you ended up as a smart, sexy, successful, happy person anyway?), that is so welcome.

8 Facts of My Week (6)

1. Someone googled "Should bald heads be buttered?" and got to my blog. I'm not sure which is more concerning, the fact that someone would search that or the fact that they got to my blog that way.

2. I finally got all my Christmas shopping done! I managed to get all the people on my list gifts at one mall, which was great, although I may need to get one more thing because I realized too late that the gifts I got for two equally close friends are unbalanced. (I got one a relatively big elephant plushie and the other a bracelet, not immediately noticing the rather large discrepancy because the bracelet was over-priced and the plushie had like 100000% reduced price.)

3. I have achieved my lifetime goal: to listen to 2 AM at 2 AM. (2 AM being an amazing Korean boy band, who I happen to be listening to as I write this.) Friday night, I was sleeping over at a friend's house, and instead of considering the fact that I had a math competition on Saturday, we stayed up all night talking and listening to k-pop. (My school, which is pretty much 105% Asian kids, has turned me into a k-pop fan despite the fact that I'm not even Korean.)

4. On Tuesday, I spent most of the day freaking out about a speech I had to give in a public speaking class on - wait for it - unicorns. UNICORNS. When I first got the speech topic, I thought it was the most awesome thing in the world, but then you start to realize that it's absolutely frustrating to be up at one in the morning, eyes practically bleeding from the effort it takes to keep them open, reading a ridiculously colorful site about unicorns. In any case, I was incredibly nervous, but I managed to build up the strength to walk to class.

Just as I had one of those movie-type moments where you realize that all you can do is try your best so you shouldn't worry because it won't help you at all, where you realize the world is a wonderful place filled with rainbows and smilies and unicorns (especially unicorns), and that everyone is beautiful and perfect in every single way (YES EVERY SINGLE WAY) - and my teacher was absent.

5. A chemistry lab murdered my grade at the very last week of the grading period of first trimester (which sent me from an A to a B+), and sent me into spirals of nail-chewing, bubble-wrap-popping, wall-clawing anxiety. At the very very very last moment, however, we got back another graded lab, which I did surprisingly well on, and my grade un-suicided, going right back to an A (barely, but still.)

6. Why is it that so-called teen classic movies never go over well with me? I hated Clueless, and The Breakfast Club wasn't much better. (I fail to understand why you would commit suicide because you got a B. I have to be among the most neurotic people in the world when it comes to grades, but I wouldn't suicide over a B.) Juno had funny moments, but I didn't like it very much either. Pretty much the only one I actually really liked was Mean Girls, but I don't see how it's possible to NOT love it.

7. I discovered that I have an amazing ability to lose not just pencils and pens but flash drives. For the past few weeks, I've restocked my pencil case nearly every weekend only to find it completely void of writing utensils by the end of the week. Even worse, my flash drive with Super-Important Fancy Information keeps getting left behind. I've been lucky thus far because of friends/teachers rescuing it for me, but I just know one day I'm going to drop it somewhere and it'll end up as a pile of ashes five miles beneath the surface of the earth.

8. I decided to end with some eye candy for you :) (An apology to any males who feel excluded!)

Also, see here!

8 Facts of My Week (5)

1. Meh, typical. I got back the history test I labored so much over and only got an 87, so now I basically have to ace my presentation to get at least an A- so my GPA doesn't die a bloody death. Grades have been consuming nearly every thought for the past week, because the trimester's ending soon, so you know what this is - Hell Week. I just have to survive until Thursday, and then Tri 1 ends. According to my mom, I talk in my sleep about my various worries of the classes I'm having trouble in (History, English, Math, Chemistry) and what I have to get on what in order to get an A. (And yes, I appreciate the irony that the two middle classes are what should be, by all rights, my best. Yet somehow I'm getting A-'s. Meh.)

2. HARRY POTTER MOVIE. My parents wouldn't let me see it on Friday (and as much as I complained to my friends about it, I do understand why - it is Hell Week, and I do have a crapload of homework to handle), but I'm going with friends next Saturday.

3. Math competition tomorrow at Princeton. I have to leave the house at 6:00 in the morning to get to the bus on time. SIX O'CLOCK. ON A SATURDAY. That should be illegal. This means I'll have to wake up at 5:20, which is earlier than I wake up on weekdays. Blah. (And yes, I'm writing this on Friday night.)

4. I have some horrible ill fortune in getting entangled in awkward situations. Yesterday morning, for instance, I went to what's known as the Breezeway, which is basically a bunch of awesome benches next to really huge windows, which let in lots of light hence the name. (Although it's rather dark that early.) I still had ten minutes before homeroom, so I figured I'd get some work done that was due Wednesday instead of socializing like usual. (As much as we geeks can socialize, anyway.) So there I was, doing my work and listening to my iPod, where suddenly someone said, "Thank you for coming, everyone!" I froze and slowly looked up, to see at least twenty people standing in a circle, which I was included in.

Yeah. Somehow I ended up in some club meeting. There was no way for me to leave without breaking the circle, which seemed even more awkward than hunching over and doing work. This is the fourth time this has happened this year. I must find some better place to do work.

5. I stabbed Crush in the skull with a pencil. By accident, of course. We were talking (or he was, and I was hyperventilating), and I was spinning my pencil as I usually do, when it flew out of my fingers and embedded in his head.

"Oh God! Are you okay?" I cried, crouching down by him.

He smiled weakly. "Y-yeah, I'm fine." He gingerly rubbed his hair around the area and then attempted to pull out the pencil, wincing. It didn't budge. "Really stuck in there, huh?" he said, with a nervous chuckle.

"Let me try," I said, stepping forward, wrapping both hands around the pencil, and yanking as hard as I could. Nothing. I pulled as hard as I could, ignoring his screams of agony.

At last I finally stopped, rivulets of sweat streaking down my face, panting. "It might have moved a little bit." I rubbed my face with my hands and looked back up. "Here, I'll try ag-"

He was gone. But, you know, he was probably really impressed by my strength, seeing how deep I was able to plunge the pencil into his brain. That's attractive... right?

6. Sleep. I need it.

7. Last week, I went down town with my best friend from elementary school who I've kind of grown apart from. Well. More than kind of. Things got quite awkward at points. She seems different than I remember. We used to fall into these amazing laughing fits that would last forever and we wouldn't be able to breathe and we'd be gasping and clutching our sides, and whenever we had play dates (yeah, this was way back), I'd always leave with my stomach aching from so much laughing. I miss that.

8. Whose great idea was wisdom teeth? THEY HURT.

8 Facts of My Week (4)

1. While walking through the rows of buses at my school with my friends (yeah, welcome to a magnet school, where you will never be able to find your bus), I walked into a bus, laughed, and promptly walked into it again. After a laughing fit that may or may not have involved us gasping on the ground, I got up and, with exaggerated care, did a wide circle around it.

I then slammed into the bus next to it.

2. Boys are freaking confusing. Why can't they just say what they MEAN? Why is this so hard? YA NOVELS HAVE NOT PREPARED ME FOR THIS.

3. I think I may have actually not failed that French-Indian War test. Some questions at the end were pretty tricky (I had to identify stuff on a map, which was not mentioned on the list of things that we were supposed to study, and maps and I don't get along), but overall it was... okay. The first half was easy. Only one part in the middle was actually hard.

4. This has been one of the most stressful weeks since school started. I had five different assignments due on Wednesday, each one requiring work with a partner. Let me give you an actual exchange between one of my partners.

Me: Oh, hey, so we need to work on that graph thing since it's sort of due today...
Partner: No.
Me: ...huh?
Partner: Do it yourself. I hate that [bleep].
Me: Er. It's sort of a partner thing.
Partner: No [bleep]ing [bleep].
Me: ...Is this a joke? We seriously have to do this.
Partner: [bleep] you, do that [bleep] yourself.

What. The. Heck. (And believe me, I was thinking much worse, but I know some of the readers here are uncomfortable with cursing, so you can just imagine it.)

5. I'm nervous for reasons that are way too personal to share on a blog, but oh God, I'm so scared. If you guys have any links to a pick-me-up, I will love you FOREVER.

6. I've always known I'm a bad singer. My mom's amazing, but I got all my musical talent from my tone-deaf dad, so it's never been a secret or anything. But yesterday, I reached an all time low. Some friends and I were singing along to a Panic! At the Disco song (from the first album, of course), and as I was listening to us, I wondered where that awful, shrill, loud noise was coming from, and thought it might be the fire alarm.

Then it struck that was my singing voice.

I think I'll be taking Introduction to JAVA Programming this trimester instead of Choir.

7. We Heart It is one of my favorite sites now. The photos are so inspirational. <3

8. Glee is amazing. I borrowed the first season DVD from the library, and I'm loving it so much more than I thought I would. And seriously, Puck is so hot. He's a bad boy but with a sensitive side, too.

8 Facts of My Week (3)

1. Dear English Teacher,

Please write legibly. Specifically, please stop making your "OK"s look like "OIC", because then I think you're trying to say "oh, I see". Also, it would maybe help your handwriting if you stopped making just the first three letters of every word distinct and then letting the rest dissolve into scribbles. You are writing words, not making a signature.

(I must thank you for my essay grade, however. I did not expect that.)

Sincerely,
That girl who ran around the hallways in bliss because she thought she was failing English when really she's failing History instead.

2. Dear History Teacher,

Please stop talking too fast when you teach. I am drowning and my GPA will suffer if I don't get at least an A- in this class. It would also maybe help if your tests weren't so hard. Just a suggestion.

Sincerely,
That girl who sits next to the dude who grunts during the entire class.

3. Dear Bus Driver,

I need your bus for sleep because CERTAIN TEACHERS are giving too much homework. I'd appreciate it if you didn't crank up the rap music as loud as it will go. It would also be helpful if you stopped running over people. The bumps make it even harder to fall asleep.

Sincerely,
That girl who can't even hear her iPod over your music.

4. Dear Heart,

Please stop crushing on that guy. HE DOESN'T LIKE YOU BACK. GET OVER IT.

Sincerely,
That girl whose ribcage you live in.

5. Dear Dinosaurs,

Thank you for existing at one point. If you hadn't, my friend wouldn't have given me those awesome stuffed versions of you guys that say "RAWR" when you squeeze them. They make me happy.

Sincerely,
That girl who likes dinosaurs.

6. Dear Rocket Ship,

Please park yourself outside my house so when I'm stressed, I can climb inside and check out that moon dude. I hear he's pretty nice.

Sincerely,
That girl who wants to take the astronomy elective.

7. Dear Math Homework,

I'm sorry. I can't help you with your problems anymore. They're something you have to deal with yourself.

Sincerely,
That girl who hates doing synthetic geometry, but finds it pretty sexy anyway.

8. Dear WIP,

God knows I love you, but don't you think you could ease up on the plot issues? It'd be a big help.

Sincerely,
That girl who works on you every single day.

8 Facts of My Week (3)

1. Halloween came at my school yesterday and I had no costume. The 'rents apparently decided that buying an awesome banana costume would be a "waste of money" better spent on "useful things". Useful things? Is a banana costume not a useful thing, I ask you? On the bright side, I saw at least three people in that very same costume today, so at least I didn't look like I was copying anyone. I also got to explain to my homeroom teacher that I was dressing up as this awesome girl named Izzy ("I don't know, have you ever heard of her?") and that I'd stalked her and so perfectly matched her speech patterns and such. He told me I was special and gave me extra candy.

2. Halloween party tonight! This marks an important event in my anti-social life. As sad as it sounds, this might actually be the first time since fourth or fifth grade when I was invited to such a large social event. (And in fourth or fifth grade, that kid was forced to invite me to his birthday party.) I also managed to convince my parents to let me go (if you have traditional Asian parents, you'll most likely understand), so I won't have to mimic teen movies and sneak out of my window (which, actually, I would probably never dare to do because there is a spider web on my window screen and I am mortally afraid of spiders).

3. Yesterday, I accidentally punched my friend in a very unfortunate place. You all know of my agility and grace, so you can probably imagine how I did this while playing rock-paper-scissors with the girl next to him.

4. I discovered I have an incredibly disability to remember people's names. However, when I give them new names, I can remember those perfectly. It is now quite common for me to walk down a hallway and say things like, "Hi Best Friend #5! Hi Imaginary Friend! Hi Not-Rotund Fellow! Hi Raven Who Does Not Look Like Raven! Hi Claustrophobic Person!"

5. This year, I'm doing amazingly well in classes I thought were hard last year, and I'm struggling in classes I aced the previous year. My report card is probably going to look like: A, A, A, F, F, A, A, A, A. Isn't that lovely, now?

6. I really need to learn how to not be overly sensitive.

7. How did I not find this site before? I now have a new way to waste tons of time!

8. Best webcomic ever? Definitely a tie between xkcd and Buttersafe.

8 Facts of My Week (3)

1. Little kids are very strange creatures. I'm sure I was never one.

2. At the math competition I volunteered at, I was told to direct traffic in a parking lot for two hours. Guess how many cars came? None. Guess who was so bored, she ended up playing football? What? No, it wasn't Madonna, it was me. I played football. With a water bottle. In a parking lot. And I didn't know the rules at all. They tried to explain them to me, but they were extremely confusing.

3. I spent two weeks being extremely nervous about a speech I had to give in a public speaking class. When the time finally came, I was the very last person, so everyone was bored and inwardly groaning as I stepped up to the podium. My speech was meant to be funny, but I had these horrible visions of people staring at me, stony-faced, throughout the entire thing. Finally, I took a deep breath and started. To my surprise, the first line - which wasn't even meant to be funny ("I believe in procrastination, the art of getting everything done, just sometime later") - made everyone burst into laughter. I still don't see how anyone could find my speech funny, but I blame it on too much sugar.

4. It's funny, the people you become friends with. The ones you think are weird or mean turn out to be friendly and funny and nice, and the ones you think you'll be awesome friends with turn out to have nothing in common with you beyond that first epic conversation.

5. I was going to be a banana for Halloween, but apparently now my parents won't let me buy the costume because it's a "waste of money". Pfft. I'll probably end up wearing a cardboard sign that says "You're just jealous of my costume." My friends tell me this perfectly sums up my personality.

6. Babies are so cute, it should be illegal.

7. Scholastic Art and Writing Competition! I'm entering this year for short short story, and I've been polishing my piece like mad. The first draft of it exploded out of me in something like twenty-five minutes, but the next few drafts have been like tearing hair follicles out of your skin with duct tape. Repeatedly. The story's finally shaping up though, so I have hope!

8. Writing on hands is very handy. (See, that was the most wonderful pun you've ever read. I will never understand why my friends called an emergency meeting with me entitled, "IZZY, YOU ARE NOT PUNNY".)

8 Facts of My Week (2)

1. I have noticed that the bus has a very distinct order of students. The freshmen sit in the front, and a little bit in the beginning of the middle. Some of the sophomores overlap a little with the freshmen in the first half of the middle, and the rest sit all the way in the back. The juniors dominate the second half of the middle, and finally, the seniors overlap with the juniors and the sophs that sit in the back.

On Thursday, I nearly missed the bus, and so when I got on, nearly all the seats were taken. The only available one was with the seniors. I got quite a few dirty looks for disrupting the natural order of the bus, and the people around me refused to have conversations with each other because some freshman dork was awkwardly sitting there, reading a book and glancing up nervously every ten seconds.

2. I have a Lit teacher who grades with an iron red pen, and I swear to God I'm going to die in that class. I consider myself pretty good for my age when it comes to writing fiction, but I despise essays. I like analyzing literature (even though I'm terrible at it), and I like a lot of the reading selections we have in this class, but I just hate writing essays. They're so mechanical and boring, and the page limits are irritating.

3. I learned the llama chant. I'm pretty sure I'm the last one in the whole school, but finally - FINALLY - I can join in when people start shouting, "Happy llama! Sad llama! Mentally deranged llama!" I also learned awkward turtle, and the awkward turtle chant (complete with Pedophile Wave at the end). I feel so accomplished now.

4. I went to an ice cream social last night thinking that (1) I could try, like, not being anti-social and (2) ICE CREAM ICE CREAM ICE CREAM. But in the end I was too full of Indian food (two Indian dudes had their birthdays today, and they actually brought it awesome food for my math class) to enjoy the ice cream, and predictably, I was anti-social. I did talk to some people, so I guess in the end it was sort of fun. I hadn't expected much anyway.

5. Indian food is good. See #4. Interestingly enough I was able to tolerate the spiciest food out of everyone, including the people who were raised for a while in Korea.

6. It always happens that on my busiest weekends (i.e. this one), my teachers dump the largest amounts of homework possible. In addition to all the essays and papers and whatnot, I also have to study for three gigantic tests that are worth like half my grade each. Oh, and the tests are all within the next few days. On hard stuff. Yay.

7. I'm volunteering at a math competition tomorrow, for 4th-8th graders. I got a free awesome Staff t-shirt that I have to wear, and I got grouped with my friends. Except, of course, for some reason my friends are in separate places from me, so I'm stuck with my sort-of friends (the ones you say "hi" to and hug on "hug-an-Asian" day [600 of the 1200 people at my school are Asian], but don't really have a lot to talk about with). Eh, could be worse.

8. I was giving my French presentation while spinning my pencil (I'm a nerd, it's what we do), but I was nervous and a little sweaty so my pencil slipped. While struggling over a nasty verb, I reached to catch my pencil and instead watched it bury its point in my palm. However, my French grade could use a little help, so instead of bailing, I tearfully spoke butchered French while blood dripped from my hand.

I think I did pretty well, all things considered.

So how was your week? Do you take a bus with a hierarchy? Had trouble with an essay? Struggled during a presentation?

8 Facts of My Week

(PS: Lots of pictures in this post. Hope you like them!)

1. Some of you may know that I started freshman year at a new high school about a month ago. It is absolutely wonderful. Everyone is ridiculously nice to the point where people leave their laptops charging in the halls and nothing gets stolen, ever. And, you know, I'm making friends. Always helpful, that. The problem is that as I'm making friends, some of my old friends are moving away. I mean, not literally. But people I used to be quite close to are now sort of distant, and I've only known my new friends for a month so I'm at this awkward stage where I don't have a lot of people to talk to.

2. Homework. I'm drowning in it. At the beginning of the year I was quite certain that I would be all super-organized and everything, but now I actually managed to have a late assignment not because I forgot to do it, or didn't do it, or left it at home or something. I brought it to class the day it was due. Our teacher announced that we all have to bring our assignments to a pile on her desk. I was scribbling down the next assignment in my planner, absent-mindedly taking my stapled papers out of my binder, and then walked up to my teacher to clarify something about the next homework. Satisfied, I walked back to my desk.

Put my planner in my bag. Opened my binder. Noticed some papers were loose and put them back in.

Including the assignment.

This is funny and depressing at the same time.

3. I caught a cold, along with everyone else at my school, except unlike everyone else, my voice is now all horrible and raspy. Guess who had to give several presentations and speeches? Very long presentations and speeches, I might add.

4. Not all was lost this week! I did get a very shiny new laptop that's all pretty and dark red (I wanted dark blue, but they were out of that color). It's very, um, tiny, and not quite set up yet (my dad - a computer technician - hasn't trusted me to do very much on any computer at all ever since The Vitamin Water Incident), but I'm sure it's wonderful all the same. At long last I will no longer have an excuse to be playing air hockey and ping pong and card games during my free periods instead of doing homework. (The laptop I'm typing on is too old to survive being at school without getting charged every twenty-six seconds.)

5. Yesterday was Hug A Short Asian day! Seeing as I go to a public magnet, the halls are filled with Asians, and where there are Asians, there are also short Asians. Just for kicks, I went up to all the tall Asians I know and said, "Hey, it's hug a short Asian day! You're short! You're Asian! Hug!" One of them was only half an inch taller than me and apparently very sensitive because he insisted on hugging me instead of me hugging him. I'm not sure what the difference is, but hey, I don't mind.

6. There are some truly awesome tissue boxes out there. Remember when I said I'm sick? This involved me raiding the house for tissues, and why would I use those boring blue floral boxes where I have a marvelous light green one decorated with adorable drawings of viruses? As I type this, there are round creatures and slug-like creatures and little froggy-jellyfish-things watching me with friendly smiles and googly eyes. I have a new appreciation for tissue box manufacturers.

7. There's a teacher at our school who, every morning, has the unfortunate job of greeting students. He stands in the hallway, swaying back and forth, and says, in the most doleful tone, "Good morning. Please make sure you have your IDs." At the end of that second sentence, his voice goes ever so slightly up, like he's asking a question - like he wants someone to say, "No! No, I will not make sure I have my ID!", just to spice things up a bit. I always feel so sorry for him, with his glassy stare and drooping head.

8. Speaking of IDs, I got mine recently. It's all nice and colorful, and then you get to the picture. The day they took the picture, of course, was the day when I was wearing one of those ratty old t-shirts I won in some math competition or other, with a lovely food stain right there near the collar. And my hair decided to go all flat and stringy and in my face, but not in my face enough to cover up my wide-eyed stare. I look stoned.

Incidentally, ID photos double as yearbook pictures. Wonderful, isn't it? :D

So how was your week? Did you get sick? Hug any short Asians? Had a terrible picture taken?
